Donor cultivation stages are distinctions made between what natural "stage" a relationship your school has with a particular donor throughout gift solicitation processes. They are:

  1. Identify
    Who exactly is the prospect?
  2. Qualify
How much and how willing are they to give?
  3. Cultivate
What is the plan for getting the donor to the final goal – to give money?
  4. Solicit
How much is the donor asked to give and where is the money going?
  5. Steward
How will this relationship be maintained after the gift has been given?
