Overview

News and Events are published via Channels in Veracross. Schools may take advantage of existing channels, or they may want to create new ones to house new content. This article covers writing an article, associating it with a channel, and publishing it to a page.

The Process For Writing an Article

Articles are written in the context of Channels in Veracross. They are not seen by anyone in a Portal until they are associated with a Channel that is pulled onto a particular page with a component that displays articles from that Channel.

To begin writing a draft, select the desired Channel from the Communications homepage. There are two options:

  1. New Draft (News): This option creates a news story that will only be published on the News & Events Portal.
  2. New Sendable News Draft: This option creates a news story that will be published as a news item on the Portal and also sent as an email.

Articles are drafted in Composer. Note that the News Summary option is especially important in this context. Clicking “Draft” will enable the article to be displayed in a portal component.

The title, preview image, and summary will display wherever the article is indexed with other articles. It is recommended that all articles have a meaningful title, significant preview image, and a 1-2 sentence summary. It is recommended that the preview image be one that is used in the article itself, and often the summary text can be pulled from the article as well.

Creating an Article From an Email

One powerful feature is the ability to create an article directly from an email drafted with Composer, achieved simply by clicking the Draft button under News Summary. This will display the email in a Portal component just as if it were drafted as a separate article.

Publishing an Event

Publishing an event to a Portal is more straightforward than an article because the process is essentially creating a query to pull in existing events according to certain criteria.

Select Parameters for Events

If an Event component does not yet exist on the layout, click the “Add” button  in the appropriate Region. There are many options on the right to choose which events to display.
