Overview
Legal custody of a student can be unique to each situation. In Veracross, custody is defined on the person relationship record by checking the “Legal Custody” field.
Custody Statuses
If the flag is indicated on a relationship, the Custody Status field will get updated automatically as one of the following:
Normal – If two resident parents have the custody flag checked, both parent relationships will show this status.
Sole – If only one parent has the custody flag checked, the parent relationship will show this status.
Joint/R – If one resident and one non-resident parent have the custody flag checked, the resident parent relationship will show this status.
Joint/NR – If one resident and one non-resident parent have the custody flag checked, the non-resident parent relationship will show this status.
No Custody – If a parent does not have the custody flag checked, the parent relationship will show this status.
Parents are automatically included in the Parent system groups, regardless of custody. Note that “Parents of” Student groups do take custody and the “Receives General Correspondence” flag on relationship records into account. To exclude people from the email distribution lists associated with these parent groups, change the Preferred Communication Method on the Other tab of the person to be “Paper Mail.”
