Overview

Assignment Groups allow you to add assignments across classes of different courses where you are the primary teacher using the “Applies to All Sections” flag on the assignment. Without an Assignment Group specified, the “Applies to All Sections” flag on the assignment will add the assignment to all sections within the same course where the same teacher is the primary teacher (as indicated on the General tab of the class).

The following are scenarios where you will need to use the “Assignment Group” field.  You can find this field by running the “Course List” query from the System homepage and then search for the field and add it to your query design. Then you can specify an ‘Assignment Group’ for the appropriate courses in the query results. For the “Assignment Group” field, just use a number greater than 0.

Add assignments to Classes across different Courses where you are the Primary Teacher

When someone is the primary teacher on classes within different courses, but those courses have the same Assignment Group specified, the “Applies to All Sections” flag will add assignments to all of the teacher’s classes in both courses.

For example:

If John was the primary teacher of a class in the Honors English course and the primary teacher of a class in the English course, but both courses had an assignment group of 5, then assignments he added to either class, when choosing “Applies to All Sections” would be added to the class in the other course as well.

Add assignments to Classes within the same Course where you are an additional Primary Teacher

When someone is a primary teacher and an additional primary teacher on classes within a course that has an Assignment Group greater than zero specified, the “Applies to All Sections” flag will add assignments across all classes.

This logic applies when the following requirements are met:

  1. The teacher must have a role of “Primary Teacher” under Class Permissions for all relevant classes
  2. The “update grades” checkbox must be checked for the teacher under Class Permissions
  3. A non-zero assignment group must be specified on the Class’ course.

For example:

If John was the head teacher of a class in the English course and a primary teacher on 2 other classes within the English Course with grade update permissions and an assignment group is specified on the English Course, when assignments are added to one of the classes and the “Applies to All Sections” flag is marked, the assignment will be added to each class within the course where John is an additional primary teacher.

Add assignments to Classes across different Courses where you are an additional Primary Teacher

Follow instructions as outlined in both #1 and #2 above.  If all requirements of #2 are in place, all that is needed is to add the same Assignment Group to both courses.

For example:

If John was the head teacher of a class in the Honors English course and an additional primary teacher on a class in the English Course with grade update permissions, and the same assignment group is specified on the Honors English Course and the English Course, when assignments are added to one of the classes and the “Applies to All Sections” flag is marked, the assignment will be added to each class in both courses where John is a primary teacher.
